At the beginning of each course we discuss this question by determining the purpose of our class. The answer becomes the first part of our Mission, Vision, Values and Goals document (see that section of this webpage). In short, there are innate values in learning a language that a phone app just can't provide; in no particular order:

• Learning a 2nd language strengthens new neuro pathways in the brain, literally making that person 'smarter'
• Knowing a 2nd language strengthens our communities and helps us become members of new ones
• Using both of Canada's official languages opens up the entire country to you
